Jeff Henigson, writer and recent transplant to our city, stopped by some months ago with news of his soon-to-be-published memoir, and after reading it, we knew that we wanted to help him launch it into the world. Warhead: The True Story of One Teen Who Almost Saved the World (Delacorte) is set during the Cold War of the 1980s, an era in which the threat of a nuclear war with the (then) USSR loomed. Then a teenager in treatment for a brain tumor, his goal was to meet with Mikahil Gorbachev to discuss nuclear disarmament. Thanks to the Starlight Children’s Foundation, his wish was granted. Sort of. Though this book is suitable for teen readers, we encourage readers of all ages to come and hear his story. Jeff Henigson recovered, graduated from the London School of Economics and Columbia University and then worked for UNICEF and the United Nations in humanitarian emergencies, and for a nonprofit in human rights.
