Jo Lendle with Matt Ruff
With our friends from Seattle’s Goethe Institute ‘Pop up’ as well as Seagull Books in Calcutta, we’re delighted to present this evening with German novelist and editor Jo Lendle. He is here with the newly released translation of his brilliant novel of the life of scientist Alfed Wegener, All the Land (Seagull Books, translated by Katy Derbyshire). Wegener was the son of a Berlin minister who came to find himself one of the most prominent scientists exploring and charting polar realms.
"This is a powerful book saturated with life, which tells as enthrallingly of meteorites and drifting continents as it does of the struggle for survival, the pain of sawing off a frozen leg, the madness of the white nothingness, and the desire for a loved one many weeks distant by foot. One will best read this inside a thick sleeping bag and with a wool cap on.” - WDR [Germany].
“A fabulous book.” - Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
Jo Lendle’s ‘day job,’ as publishing director of Hanser Verlag, one of Germany’s leading literary publishers.
One of the authors Hanser publishes, in German translation, is Seattle novelist Matt Ruff, most recently the novel, Lovecraft Country. He will be part of the proceedings this evening, conversing with Jo Lendle as part of things.
Co-presented with the GOETHE SEATTLE POP UP.
