Michael Bennett - SOLD OUT
This event is SOLD OUT.
While this evening finds Michael Bennett no longer part of the Seattle Seahawk football team, it does find him here in a Seattle that esteems and will miss his presence once he is truly off and away - with this evening as a chance to show appreciation for how connected and committed to this community he and his family have been. Even more, this is the occasion to welcome Michael Bennett into a relatively new role, one he will be able to carry on in the years to come after playing - that of author. He is finally here tonight to celebrate publication of Things That Make White People Uncomfortable (Haymarket Books, co-authored with Dave Zirin). This book beautifully, powerfully, insightfully says so many things about race, culture, gender, class (and football), it’s hard to know where to begin. His bows to Angela Davis - reverent, knowing, funny - alone make this book worth reading.
“With vulnerability, humility, and the courage to tell the truth, Michael Bennett reminds us at the heart of every social awakening are ordinary people who choose justice and resistance over silence and comfort. In a profession where independent thought is punished, Michael Bennett lays it all on the line with this book. Bennett’s insights into everything from Black Lives Matter, to college athletics, to intersectional feminism will not only make white people uncomfortable, but it will challenge the status quo of our entire society.” —Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor.
