Poets Booked: Sharon Hashimoto, Robert McNamara, Ann Spiers, & John Willson with Michael Spence

This evening’s virtual group poetry reading highlights a delightful quartet of poets from in and around Seattle, all reading from recent work. Going alphabetically here, which may or may not be the way the reading unfolds. Poet Sharon Hashimoto, recently retired from nearly three decades of teaching at Highline College, has both a brand-new collection of poems out, More American (Grid Books/Off the Grid Press and recipient of that press’ publication prize), but her award-winning 2003 collection, The Crane Wife, is newly reissued by Red Hen Press. Robert McNamara, who has played many literary roles over the years, from University of Washington faculty member to translator to publisher (L’Epervier Press), has To Hell and Back and My SARS-CoV-2, Thus Far from The Ravenna Triple Series, Ravenna Press) newly out, following three earlier collections. Ann Spiers, joining us from Vashon Island and herself fairly recently retired from teaching at Highline College, has two new collections out - Back Cut (Black Heron) and Rain Violent (Empty Bowl). And Bainbridge Island’s John Willson, recently designated an ‘Island Treasure’ for his good works there, has among his good works the recent poetry volume, Call This Room a Station (Moon Path Press).

Program emcee Michael Spence may or may not have prepared for his role this evening by driving a Metro bus for many years, but he is also a poet of note with five books out, most recently Umbilical (St. Augustine’s Press). This should be good and spirited.
