Russell Canan & Robert Alsdorf

Superior Court judge Russell Canan speaks today about his book, Tough Cases: Judges Tell the Stories of Some of the Hardest Decisions They've Ever Made (New Press), co-edited with Gregory Mize and Frederick Weisberg. He appears in conversation with contributing author, Seattle Judge Robert Alsdorf. Judge Aldorf tells the story of his decision on I-695, the car-tabs initiative, where he found that joining the roll-back with a de-facto referendum requirement invalidated the voter-approved initiative. He survived politically and the state Supreme Court affirmed the ruling 8-1. The book also includes judges’ perspectives on cases involving Scooter Libby, Elián González and Terri Schiavo, among others.

Tickets ($10) include a reception. Books will be available for purchase and signing. RSVPs requested at but tickets may also be available on the night of the program.
