Ryann Donnelly with Christopher Frizzelle
Ryann Donnelly makes this welcome return to Seattle, albeit in a different public role than she was most known for previously. The lead singer for many years of the acclaimed Seattle-based band Schoolyard Heroes, she has taken on cultural scholarship, earning a PhD from the department of Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London. She visits tonight with her newly published book, Justify My Love: Sex, Subversion, and Music Video (Repeater Books), to be joined onstage in conversation by Christopher Frizzelle of The Stranger. Using her own band’s experience in part, this book is a fascinating, wide-ranging study of music and its visual representations in video, the parts its played in music, cultural and larger political realms. This is a story going back as far as 1981, with the launch of MTV, on up to the present day.
