Sunandini Banerjee with Michelle Dunn Marsh

We take advantage of a Seattle and U.S. visit from Kolkata by esteemed editor, book designer, artist, and translator Sunandini Banerjee in having her here this evening. Most known for her longstanding work in several roles at award-winning Seagull Books, one of the foremost English language literary publishing houses on the planet, with a particular devotion to bringing translated work from languages all over the world, Sunandini Banerjee is great at discussing her art and craft, as well as doing that work. This conversation with Seattle-based publisher, editor, author, and curator Michelle Dunn Marsh, should be one that makes the world, book and otherwise, seem both small and vast.  Sunandini Banerjee’s book covers and collage art have been the subject of numerous exhibitions around the world, and the annual book catalogs she designs for Seagull are the talk of Frankfurt’s global international book fair.  She is also the credited translator from the Bengali of Nabarun Bhattacharya’s 1994 novel, Harbart (New Directions).

“An astonishing novel, zany, terrifying, and liberating in equal measure, by a writer who was a visionary. Bhattacharya’s voice is wholly original: lyrical, melancholic, comic, and bracingly obscene: a book that explodes in your hands.” - Siddhartha Deb.

Harbart is a haunted man—a victim-participant in the forward march of capitalism and of the impetus to assign significance to the pointlessness and chaos of material existence. Banerjee’s acrobatic translation is both enormously fun and true to the radical content.”—Asymptote.

Michelle Dunn Marsh is the guiding presence behind Minor Matters Books, one of the most distinct photography/art book publishers in the U.S. She has been a force in photography for over twenty years, was until recently director of Photographic Center Northwest. She is the author of a brilliant, photo-rich memoir, Seeing Being Seen: A Personal History of Photography.
