With stories that connect characters from many different walks of life, this collection explores identity and the complexities of cultures and individuals. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has brilliantly written each story with a distinct voice that compels us to pay attention, think, learn, and feel.
Heartfelt, funny and charming, The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry is rich with insight and memorable characters to root for. It is a celebration of the important roles that the stories we love play in our lives, and how those stories take on new meanings as we change and grow.
Dedicated to "the daughters," Aja Monet's My Mother Was A Freedom Fighter is a work of bold, fresh, innovative storytelling. While these poems are beautifully woven arrangements of words, they are also powerful calls to action.
This collection, made up of one novella and two short stories, is so incredibly fun. And violent and witty and genre-bending and stereotype-challenging and brash and shameless. Feral hippos, sassy hippos, badass contract killers that team up with hippos, betrayal, friendship, love. Just so much.
All the intensity, cutting language, and spot-on social commentary one expects from Octavia Butler—packed into punch-to-the-gut short stories. I especially enjoy reading the pieces at the end of each story in which Octavia gives us some insight into her thoughts. We even get a couple full-length essays in this collection too.
"Written in memory of women and girls killed in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico and for all women and girls who are victims of domestic violence." —from the dedication
Claudia Castro Luna was the first author I had the pleasure of hosting here at Elliott Bay in our Readings Room. Washington State Poet Laureate, Seattle Civic Poet, community-minded, and all-around amazing person. Hearing her read from Killing Marías was a singular experience, full of passion and intensity and thoughtful care. Read every word in this book.
